The purpose of amending the Fugitive offenders Ordinance is justified. The efforts of the Hong Kong Special Administrative region Government and mainstream public opinion for the rule of law and justice must not be abandoned halfway.
Opposition demonstrations took place on Sunday in Hong Kong in response to amendments to the Fugitive offenders Ordinance by the Hong Kong SAR government. The scale of the demonstration is relatively large, and the organizers are doing the same thing again. However, it is worth mentioning that also on Sunday, the Major Alliance for the maintenance of Justice announced that more than 730000 Hong Kong people had received joint support for the amendment of the Fugitive offenders Ordinance.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative region (HKSAR) Government introduced the Mutual legal Assistance for Fugitive offenders and Criminal matters (Amendment) Bill 2019 into the Legislative Council in April this year. The former Fugitive offenders Ordinance was passed before the reunification of Hong Kong. According to the Ordinance, Hong Kong has entered into long-term agreements with 20 jurisdiction around the world for the surrender of Fugitive offenders, excluding mainland China, Macao and Taiwan. The amendment by the SAR Government includes the mainland and Australia and Taiwan. The Bill also provides that it applies only to criminals who have committed 37 internationally recognized serious criminal offences.
This is a normal SAR legislative activity, but has been seriously political hype by opposition and international support forces. If there are murderers and robbers who have fled to hide in Hong Kong after committing crimes abroad, which member of the public is willing to provide them with shelter or even be neighbors without their knowledge? What's more, how can Hong Kong, which has always been known for the rule of law, be a safe haven for a small number of criminals.
But Hong Kong's opposition and their supporters are trying to label the amendment as a "threat to human rights in Hong Kong". In the case of insufficient opposition statements in Hong Kong, international solidarity has been pulled together and the so-called "momentum" has been pieced together. A small number of similar gatherings took place Sunday in a small number of Western cities in North America, Australia and other places, according to foreign reports. As we all know, in western society, if some forces want to engage in political demonstrations and have the power to "pay for it," it is not difficult to concatenate such political shows.
It is worth noting that some international forces have significantly increased their interaction with the opposition in Hong Kong in recent years. Two groups of opposition figures in Hong Kong visited the United States in March and May this year to focus on telling the US Government about the revision of the Fugitive offenders Ordinance by the SAR Government. The chairman and vice chairman of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Committee in Congress received the March group. U.S. House Speaker Pelosi met with the Hong Kong opposition twice, and Secretary of State Pompeo also met with Hong Kong opposition figures in May and attacked the Amendment Ordinance as a "threat to the rule of law in Hong Kong." The British and Canadian foreign ministers issued a joint statement on Hong Kong amendments at the end of May. The "last Governor" Patten maliciously attacked amending the Fugitive offenders Ordinance on the 6th of this month as a "terrible blow" to Hong Kong's status as an international financial centre. It also revealed that the argument that the amendment made by the Hong Kong Government was "nonsense".
These are much-needed ammunition for the political mobilization of the radical opposition in Hong Kong. Over the past period of time, the people of Hong Kong have decided that there has been a marked decrease in the number of people willing to participate in street politics, and the public has more support and understanding of the various measures taken by the Hong Kong Government to implement "one country, two systems". Some Western forces have made more efforts to talk about Hong Kong affairs and cheer up the Hong Kong opposition, which has become an important condition for the latter to make more noise.
Washington has been particularly active in meddling in Hong Kong affairs for a while. Radical American politicians such as Rubio also threatened to "review whether to continue to give Hong Kong special treatment for trade and economy." These are obviously related to the trade war waged by the United States against China, and it cannot help but suspect that the United States is using Hong Kong as a bargaining chip in the game between China and the United States, and even by undermining the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong as a means of curbing China's development. Some of Hong Kong's radical opponents should be aware of this and have stepped up their collusion with the US. The affairs of Hong Kong are purely internal affairs of China. The political operation of the opposition in Hong Kong is unpopular and unpopular. The theme of "one country, two systems" runs counter.
From a historical perspective, however, these collusion and the resulting waves are boring bubbles. Hong Kong's opposition and their supporters are now unjustifiably tagged, and it is not what these labels can hold on to how Hong Kong moves forward.
